Learn how to tune up quality metal handplanes (both new and vintage). Whether it’s a new plane, or a vintage Stanley or Record from a flea market, it will likely need some tuning in order to cut wood well. This class will walk you through disassembly, cleaning, and properly adjusting metal-bodied handplanes.

Bring any quality vintage Stanley, Record, Sargent, Millers Falls, or Craftsman metal plane. It doesn’t need to be in excellent condition, but avoid well rusted, pitted, or cracked planes, or those with missing parts. There are an abundance of planes in serviceable condition, so for this class avoid tools that are clearly “project planes.”

We’ll cover the following topics:

  • Basic sharpening
  • Flattening the sole
  • Frog alignment and setting
  • Checking and fixing a chipbreaker
